Tourists can save up to 56% of the ticket price by booking 69 days before leaving for European destinations and almost 38% if they book their flights to destinations worldwide 139 days in advance.
Pre-booking is not the only way to save money when passengers purchase airline tickets, according to data from the Fifth Annual Airworthiness Study.
Sunday is the cheapest day of departure, with a 9% lower cost on flights than Saturday (the most expensive day of the week). Tourists planning vacations in more distant destinations can save up to 9% on Sunday (504 euros) instead of Friday. The average cost for a non-European ticket purchased Friday is 576 euros.
Those who want to save on airplane tickets should also consider the time of day. Traveling to European destinations during the afternoon (14:00 pm – 6:00 pm) can save up to 19% compared to lunch flights (12:00 pm – 14:00 pm), which have a average cost of 138 euros. In the case of destinations outside the continent, evening flights (10:00 pm – 4:00 am) at an average cost of 505 euros are the cheapest, resulting in savings of up to 12% over lunch flights, which cost about 575 euros.
