The Economy Ministry announced on Wednesday that Mangalia, the largest shipyard in Europe, will be built luxury boats for cruises, large-capacity boats for oil and maritime transport vessels, in the context in which they were attracted major contracts that will allow the site to operate at full capacity.
“Just six months after the Damen Shipyards Mangalia site benefits from the Damen international sales network, new major contracts have been attracted that will allow the site to operate at full capacity this summer,” the Ministry of Economy said in a statement.
“We can say that through these contracts, Damen Mangalia Shipyard restarts its activity and begins to produce large ships in the largest shipyard in Europe. The Romanian economy has gained because it is a value added product.
In addition, jobs, opportunities and prospects for future investors and suppliers are created. This is a new stage in the Romanian naval construction, which allows the continuation of a long tradition of shipbuilding in the Black Sea, “Economy Minister Niculae Badalau said.
One of these new projects, which will be carried out at Mangalia Shipyard, is a cruise ship, namely a 155-meter long mega yacht for luxury travel. The contract was signed with SeaDream Yacht Club in Norway, marking the entry of the Damen Group into the cruise ship market.
The yacht will be built entirely at Damen Mangalia Shipyard, according to the ministry.
Here too, the Romanian workers will build transport vessels and a complex ship for offshore farms, with a loading capacity of over 10,000 tons (10,000 TDW).
“The potential of Mangalia is huge and it is the basis for Damen to realize long-term ambitions to build large, complex ships, especially for the cruise sector, passenger and offshore energy vessels.
The sanctuary offers opportunities not only for the Damen group, but also for shipbuilding personnel and the Romanian maritime industry as a whole, “said Chris Groninger, managing director of Damen Mangalia Shipyard.
For the offshore segment, manufacturing will include offshore structures, submarine patterns and various pipelines or floats for windmills at sea as well as for aquaculture markets. In addition, a wide range of offshore vessels, including turbine inspection and installation vessels, lifting platforms, FPSO, field development vessels, and deep-sea vessels covering both renewable and non-renewable sectors worldwide.
“With the takeover of the site management, Damen has engaged in a long-term strategic partnership with the Ministry of Economy. The Naval Mangalia Shipyard benefits from Damen Group‘s worldwide commercial and shipbuilding expertise and shipbuilding expertise to continuously develop its portfolio of orders received by the site, to attract the workforce and to make all the necessary investments, “the press release said.
Ship for the search and recovery of deep sea diamonds
Also, a deepwater diamond search and recovery ship will be built in the Damen Mangalia Naval Station, which will be 177 meters long and be the most modern and technologically-constructed craft of its kind in the world.
According to a Damen release, the 177-meter-long special ship will be the most modern and technological ship to search and recover diamonds in the world.
The contract was awarded to the Mangalia site at the beginning of this year and has already gone to the actual work to build the ship that will operate off Namibia.
The new offshore ship will benefit from a dynamic positioning system – DP2, which is based on a seven-propeller system – powered by six 3230 eKW generators each, the source said.
The recipient of the impressive ship is De Beers Marine Namibia (Pty), and the shipbuilding contract was signed in February 2019.
The construction of the ship will take about two years, and in the second quarter of 2022, the first delivery of diamonds is also estimated.
