Evening before Easter Sunday, the locals gather in the town square to lift thousands of colorful lanterns to heaven to sing “Christos Anesti” – “Christ is risen”. In the weeks before the event, children receive money after church services every Friday to buy as many lanterns.
The main focus throughout Spain is on “Semana Santa” – “Holy Week“, which this year runs from April 9 to 15. It is an important destination when it comes to Passover. The highlight is Easter Sunday, when organizing “Scoppio del Carro” or “explosion of the cart”. A 500 year old cart filled with fireworks and carried through the streets by soldiers, musicians and men dressed in costumes of the XVth century. When it reaches its final destination, Il Duomo of Florence, Archbishop of Florence ignite fireworks in the form of a dove (symbolizing the Holy Spirit), starting an impressive fireworks show.
